Isle of Wight Healthy Eating Alliance
The main aim of the Alliance
The IWHEA has a main aim to promote and enable healthy eating for all households on the Isle of Wight and support Island households producers and food retailers to improve access to affordable, fresh and local foods. It is a true partnership of professionals and community representatives working together. The active involvement of lay people in the IWHEA has ensured a rich network of people working together to reach into the heart of the Island’s communities. With over 100 members the IWHEA can draw on an excellent range of skills and knowledge to deliver effective and targeted programmes.
IW HEALTHY EATING ALLIANCE AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Winners were announced at the Quay Arts Centre on Friday, 16 January 2009.
The awards celebrate best policy and practice in healthy eating in a range of settings a across the Island, and are organised by the Isle of Wight Rural Community Council. The awards attracted regional and national attention with guests from the Food Standards Agency and City University, London together with Andrew Turner MP and Cllr Alan Wells.
The awards now in their 4th year are sponsored by local businesses and organisations committed to healthy eating.
Healthy eating has become sharply into focus with the launch of the Government’s campaign “Change for Life” which advises people to eat better, move more and live longer in recognition of the fact that if current lifestyles continue that 90% of today’s children could be overweight or obese by 2050.
The winners were:

♦ Stoneground Flour & Wight Milk Catering Supervisors Award – Sherry Cowley, Gurnard Primary
♦ Age Concern Award for Residential and Nursing Homes - Abbeyfield Yarmouth Society
♦ Godshill Organics Early Years Award: Cowes Childrens Centre
♦ Childrens Fund Community Groups Award: Carisbrooke Cooks
♦ IW PCT Hospitality Award: Quay Arts Café
♦ Hamilton’s local Produce Class: Real Island Food Company
♦ Outstanding Contribution: Dr Martin Caraher
